The Finale

I'm writing my last post #23. I've tried some things I've never heard of, experiemented with technology that I wasn't sure of and discovered many things that will be useful to me. I've registered and have passwords to places, I've never dreamed of.
I've already shared Shelfari and Librarything with customers and staff. I've passed an idea to use Lively in Teen progaming, I've shared google tools as an idea for staff to share with customers who are short on time and need to save time, and used it to create something I needed to have. I twittered, visited the sandbox and shared my experience with my family, who thought I was crazy!!! All in all it was a great experience, I grew in my knowledge and enjoyed the different challenges.
Here's to the next 23 things!

Blog Complete

I seem to have missed a blog moment, so here it is. I remember when I set up my blog, I wondered if I'd remember everything I needed to remember and if I'd make it through the 23 things. Well I lived to tell the tale.....Hooray!!!!

Moldi

I downloaded a fiction title to listen to and found it to be easy and straightforward. I'm looking forward to growth in this technology. Someday we'll have download stations that will take the place of our collections, that never seem to be large enough!

Mashups

While exploring a variety of mashups I happened upon this neat site that will allow me to add a variety of different things to one page. News, directions, weather, time, games, music video, blogs a one stop shopping experience. Check it out I hope you like it as much as I did. http://www.pageflakes.com/

Podcasts

I explored some podcast directories and was surprised to see the wealth of information out there. I listened to a couple things and added an RSS to my Bloglines.

I see this tool as another useful thing for the library. Could be used to convey information, news and could also be used as a training tool.

Both YouTube and Podcasts have great potential in the library world.

YouTube

I love Youtube. What I've used this tool for in the past is to check out my grandson's latest trick. My daughter in law downloads videos so the family can check out his progress.

For library use, I think we could use this tool anytime the library has something they want to share. Customers love the visual media and are always looking for a video to help them do things, we could incorporate this technology to demonstrate how to use the new catalog, how to get a library card, promotion for storytimes, moldi, just to name a few things. Have the access right on the website for customers.

Lively

Almost like playing with colorforms. It was fun picking out rooms, furniture and my avatar. Of course this is something that could take hours of time playing around with . A fun way to pass some time, but I don't see this as something I will use with work.

Sandbox

I posted my favorite movies and books and read through what other folks posted. I really enjoyed checking out favorite blogs. It's good to know about.

Wikis

Wikis are yet another way to communicate information.
I liked the Book Lovers Wiki and could see something like that working for CML. Allowing customers to input reviews would make it more intersting for all.
Evaluating what tool would work best for some of these tasks will be important.

Web 2.0

After reading Icebergs by Rick Anderson I saw the ways CML is addressing the movement toward 2.0 technology.

We don't keep a just in case collection, our collection has become leaner and more relevant every year I've worked here.

I'm looking forward to continued improvement in computer programs and databses making them easier for me and the customer to use, anything we develop is done with the ease of use in mind.

Virtual use is growing and it shows by the numbers using our services online. Discussions have been held on ways to go to our customers and as a result we've begun to investigate ways to reach out to our customers where they are, using their tools.

The times are a changing and they are changing fast! Thanks to Learn and Play I've taken the time to explore some the popular 2.0 tech sites like flickr, del.icio.us and librarything and found them useful for the most part, but without a doubt entertaining.

Delicious.com

I successfully signed up and imported my favorites to the site. It was quick and very easy to use.

Twitter

I got my account and twittered to a few people. Interesting to see how folks are using this tool. For the library---maybe chatting books with customers and staff would work. I think Librarything might work better though.

Image Generator

I checked out Logomaker.com and found it easy to use. Perhaps it's simplicity is limiting, but I appreciated being able to change colors fonts and locations with just a click of the mouse. I liked the fact that I could create the logo without having to register for anything.

LibraryThing

I keep a paper notebook of all the books I've read since 2000. This is great and I'm going to start transferring my list. I've just starred the ones I've really loved, this is going to give me an opportunity to add comments and reviews. I think it's great. Customers who are always looking for something great to read would love to get a peek at what the staff is reading. A branch LibraryThing would be fun and easy to add to and would get use.

My grandson's first visit to the library

The presentation programs are so close to Microsoft programs it's very easy to transfer skills.
These are great to share with customers so they can access their documents without having to save on a floppy or flashdrive. All free, amazing.

Take a look at my cute grandson.

Bloglines

Wow!! Talk about information. I'm going to have to hone my subscriptions. My next goal is to take some time to explore some of the blogs on Learn and Play. Right now I've added mostly news blogs. I can see this becoming addictive.

Tweendom

I've added a blog to follow that I think will be useful. New teen titles come and go so quickly and this will help me keep up on the new titles that look interesting.

Montager

I checked out the Montger, and found it really interesting. It was fun to play around with different images. I'm going to try creating a book with photos from Homework Help Centers.

1st Blog

The habit that is the hardest for me is Play. I focus on work and sometimes miss the fun of the learning.

The habit easiest is creating my toolbox. I like gathering the things I need to learn something new. Then I have to find the time to use them!
